The American standard defines refractory materials as non-metallic materials that, based on their chemical and physical properties, can be used to make structures and devices exposed to temperatures above 1000°F (538 °C).

The Japanese standard defines refractory materials as: shaped refractory materials that can be used at temperatures above 1500℃, unshaped refractory materials with a maximum service temperature above 800℃, refractory mortar and refractory insulating bricks.

China's standards for refractory materials follow the ISO standard, stipulating that refractory materials refer to non-metallic materials with physical and chemical properties suitable for use at high temperatures, but it cannot be ruled out that some products may contain a certain amount of metallic materials.

From the definitions of refractory materials in the above three countries, it can be seen that the descriptions of the connotation and extension of refractory materials vary from country to country. Some specify the operating temperature, while others do not.
